The 2012 LaSalle
Athletics advanced to Championship games in back-to-back tournament weekends!
The 2012’s competed in the Mid-Summer Classic at EMU in Michigan this past weekend. After finishing third in round robin play, they advanced to the semifinal game against the 2011 South West Detroit Aztecs. The score was tied 8-8 when regulation time had expired, and the game moved to an international tie breaker inning. With one out and a runner on second, the Athletics were able to quickly cash two runs, allowing them to pull ahead 10-8. Strong pitching, great communication and fantastic fielding kept the Aztecs scoreless, allowing LaSalle to advance to the finals.
The Athletics struggled to find momentum in the Championship game against a very strong and talented 2012 Trenton Blast. At the top of the 4th inning LaSalle was down 10-4 with regulation time quickly approaching. The Athletics racked up a 7-run rally putting them ahead 11-10. It was time for a defensive hold, however with two outs, numerous well hit balls allowed Trenton to score three runs and win the Championship 13-11. Although it was not the conclusion the team had wanted, the girls battled hard. Both the semi-final, and Championship games were exceptionally exciting and games to be proud of!
The coaches are beyond proud of this group of young athletes! Although the girls had prepared for Michigan rules, they had to learn new defensive strategies quickly and adapt to running longer base paths in game settings. Rather than shy away from the challenge, the girls rose to the demands and pushed themselves, battling until the very end.
